Hospital Foundation Radiothon: Crosby jersey raises $40,000 in online auction
The 3rd annual “Cape Breton Cares” Radiothon took place on Thursday (September 30), raising over $450,000 for the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation. All proceeds support enhanced cancer care, the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Pediatrics and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
As part of the fundraiser, R.U.A Sports Fanatic store in the Mayflower Mall donated an authentic and autographed Sidney Crosby Team Canada Jersey, to be auctioned online. In the month leading up to Radiothon Day, bids had already topped the thousand dollar mark.
On the morning of Radiothon Day itself, the game changed. In just over an hour, the high bid jumped from $1000 to over $4000. Every few minutes, the bid went up by thousands of dollars, and by noon it was fifteen grand!
The pace continued until, with only half an hour left, the bid was up to a whopping $20,000.
When R.U.A. Sports Fanatic owner Dale Mackinnon learned that two prominent Cape Breton businessmen were battling it out for the Sidney Crosby autographed jersey, he called the manufacturer that produces and authorizes the jersey. When he told them what was happening, they were floored.
They decided to authorize a second jersey, and at 6:00 pm, as the auction closed, the two bidders – Joe Anthony of A&L Seafoods and Jimmy Kennedy of Louisbourg Seafoods – were each awarded a jersey. The two men contributed a total of $40,000 to the Hospital Foundation’s Radiothon.
Special thanks to the manufacturer, R. U. A. Sports Fanatic, 94.9 The Cape / CJCB 1270am / Max 98.3fm, and of course Joe and Jimmy.
